What is Celebration of Student Writing?
The Celebration of Student Writing is an annual event that features the writing of undergraduate students at UNM. Individually or as a whole class, students create installations that represent the work they are completing in their writing classes. The Celebration allows students publicly showcase their work, fosters student engagement, and helps give first-year students voice and agency at the university.
This event connects students, student representatives, faculty, UNM administrators and the public interested in building civic literacy and community at UNM and local schools. The Celebration is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, Writing Across Communities Alliance, and the Department of English Language and Literature. The Celebration 2018 will take place on March 8th, from 10 am to 3 pm in the SUB Ballroom C. |
Why we celebrate student writing
It is our belief, as instructors of first-year writing and members of the Writing Across Communities movement, that students deserve the opportunity to showcase their work in a public forum. While many resources are directed toward upper-class and graduate students, the Celebration sends a message to first-year and beginning students that their voices, ideas, and research will be valued throughout their time at UNM. In addition, the Celebration promotes civic literacy shared among communities. It seeks to create public spaces in which conversation, debate, and learning is encouraged, and it helps to create opportunities for conversation that defies institutional and disciplinary boundaries: between students, instructors, and administrators. It demonstrates a willingness on the part of the people “in charge” to listen to and engage with the students who are often the most marginalized.
